Quick Answer

The schema markup types an Indian business actually needs are a small set: Organization on the homepage, BreadcrumbList on every page, Product or Service on each thing you sell, FAQPage where you answer questions, Article on blog posts, and Event, Course or JobPosting only when you run those. Each is a JSON-LD block that takes a developer 30 to 90 minutes per template and must describe only what is visible on the page. Test every page in the Rich Results Test before launch and watch the Search Console reports afterwards.

This guide is for business owners, marketing managers and developers in India who have added or been asked to add structured data and want to know which types are worth the effort, what Google's rules are for each, and how to find and fix errors. By the end you can hand your developer a type-by-type list and check their work. Local business markup for shops and clinics is covered separately in our schema markup for local business guide; this post covers everything else.

Schema markup types explained: which ones a business actually needs

Schema.org lists hundreds of types. Google uses a few dozen for rich results, and a typical Indian business site needs six to ten. This is the shortlist we apply on client sites.

Schema typePut it onWhat Google can showKey required fields
OrganizationHomepageKnowledge panel details, logo, brand entityname, url, logo
BreadcrumbListEvery inner pageBreadcrumb path in place of the URLitemListElement with position, name, item
ProductProduct and pricing pagesPrice, availability, rating in the resultname, image, offers or review or aggregateRating
ServiceService pagesNo rich result; entity clarity for Google and AIname, provider, areaServed, serviceType
FAQPagePages with visible Q and ARich result now limited; still read by AI systemsmainEntity of Question with acceptedAnswer
Article or BlogPostingBlog postsHeadline, image, date, author in Top stories and Discoverheadline, image, datePublished, author
VideoObjectPages with an embedded videoVideo thumbnail, key momentsname, thumbnailUrl, uploadDate, description
EventEvent and webinar pagesEvent listing with date and venuename, startDate, location or online mode
CourseTraining and institute pagesCourse list and course info resultsname, description, provider
JobPostingCareer pages, one per jobListing in Google's jobs experiencetitle, description, datePosted, hiringOrganization, jobLocation

Use JSON-LD in a script block, one per page, nested where types relate (an Organization inside Article as publisher, Offer inside Product). Never mark up something the visitor cannot see on the page; that single rule prevents most manual actions.

Organization schema and breadcrumb schema: the two every site needs

Organization schema

Organization schema goes on the homepage only. Include name, legal name if different, url, logo (a square or wide PNG of at least 112px), a description, founding date, address with postal code and country, a telephone with +91, and sameAs links to your Google Business Profile, LinkedIn, YouTube and other official profiles. Add alternateName for the short forms people use for your brand ("JK Tech Hub" and "jktechhub" for example), because that helps Google connect brand searches in both spellings. A contactPoint with contactType "sales" and the languages you answer in is worth the extra lines.

Breadcrumb schema is a BreadcrumbList with ListItem entries in order, each with position, name and the full URL. It mirrors the visible breadcrumb trail (Home, Solutions, HRMS Software) and lets Google show that path in the result instead of a raw URL. Once the developer wires it to the site navigation, every page gets it automatically. Check that the last item is the current page and names match the visible trail.

Product schema and service schema: marking up what you sell

Product schema

Product schema fits anything with a price, including software licences, machines, spare parts and bundles. Required fields are name and image, plus at least one of offers, review or aggregateRating. For Indian sites the Offer carries price as a number, priceCurrency "INR", availability as a schema.org URL (InStock, PreOrder) and optionally priceValidUntil. If you sell a range, use AggregateOffer with lowPrice and highPrice. For shipped products, shippingDetails and a return policy help the merchant listing result. Mark up only products the page actually sells at the stated price; a page listing a price in schema that differs from the visible price is the most common Product error we fix.

Service schema

Service schema has no dedicated rich result. Its value is entity clarity: it tells Google and AI assistants exactly what you provide, who provides it (provider pointing to your Organization), where (areaServed listing cities or "IN") and under what name (serviceType). On a service page add name, description, provider, areaServed, serviceType and, if you show pricing, an Offer with the price band. AI answer engines use it when they describe what a company does.

FAQ schema rules, review schema rules and how-to schema

FAQ schema rules

FAQPage schema is still valid markup, but since 2023 Google shows the FAQ rich result mainly for well-known government and health sites. For everyone else the expanded FAQ in the result is gone. It is still worth adding because AI assistants and Google's own systems read the question and answer pairs to understand the page. The rules: every question and its full answer must be visible on the page, one FAQPage per page, no promotional text or links stuffed into answers, and no using it on a forum page where users supply answers (that is QAPage). Use questions people search, not taglines.

Review schema rules

Review schema rules are where businesses most often earn a manual action. Review and aggregateRating must be about a specific product, service, course, event or similar item, not about your business as a whole on your own site; Google treats self-serving reviews of a LocalBusiness or Organization as a violation. The reviews must be real and visible on the page, ratingValue needs bestRating and worstRating context, and you cannot copy Google reviews into your markup as if they were collected on your site. For a product page with genuine customer reviews shown on it, the markup is fine and the stars in the result are worth having.

How-to schema

HowTo schema no longer produces a rich result in Google Search; the feature was retired in 2023. You can leave existing HowTo markup in place without harm, but do not spend new development time on it. Write the steps as a numbered list under a clear heading instead; that formatting is what both featured snippets and AI answers pick up.

Article, video, event, course and job posting schema

Article schema

On every blog post use Article or BlogPosting with headline (under 110 characters), image (ideally three sizes in 16:9, 4:3 and 1:1), datePublished and dateModified in ISO format with the +05:30 offset, author as a Person with a name and a URL to an author page, and publisher as your Organization. Keep dateModified honest; updating the date without changing the content is a pattern Google discounts.

Video schema

If a page embeds a YouTube video, VideoObject markup with name, description, thumbnailUrl, uploadDate, duration and the embedUrl or contentUrl makes the page eligible for the video result with a thumbnail. Add a Clip list with start and end offsets for key moments if the video is over three minutes. For manufacturers with machine demonstrations on YouTube, it is one of the cheapest wins.

Event schema

Event schema needs name, startDate with time zone, and a location: a Place with a full address for a physical event, or a VirtualLocation with a URL plus eventAttendanceMode set to online for a webinar. Add endDate, offers for ticket price (free events use a zero price with INR), organizer, performer where relevant, and eventStatus. Mark each actual date; a recurring class is several Events, not one open-ended one.

Course schema

Course schema serves coaching institutes, training centres and online academies. Each course needs name, description and provider as an Organization. A page listing several courses can qualify for the course list result with at least three courses marked up. For a single course page, the newer course info markup adds educationalLevel, timeRequired, offers with the fee in INR and hasCourseInstance with the mode and schedule.

Job posting schema

Job posting schema puts your vacancy into Google's jobs experience, a free recruiting channel for IT and manufacturing companies in Gujarat. Each job gets its own page and its own JobPosting with title, description in HTML, datePosted, validThrough, employmentType, hiringOrganization and jobLocation with the full address. Add baseSalary with INR and a unit if you can. The rule that trips most companies: remove the markup or expire the page as soon as the job is filled, because expired listings draw a manual action.

How to test schema markup and fix schema errors in Search Console

Test schema markup

Test every template before launch and after any site change:

  1. Paste the page URL or code into Google's Rich Results Test. It shows which rich results the page is eligible for and lists errors (blocking) and warnings (optional fields).
  2. Run the same page through the Schema Markup Validator at schema.org for a strict check of the vocabulary itself, including types Google does not render.
  3. View the page source on a phone and confirm the JSON-LD block is present and identical to the desktop version.
  4. Use the URL Inspection tool in Search Console to see how Google actually rendered the markup on its last crawl.
  5. After indexing, open the enhancement reports (Products, Breadcrumbs, Videos, Events, Job postings) and confirm valid item counts are rising.

Schema errors in Search Console

Schema errors in Search Console appear under Enhancements and Shopping as "Invalid items" with a reason. The common ones: "Missing field" for a required property such as image on Article or price on Offer; "Invalid object type" where a string was given instead of an object (author as text instead of a Person); "Either offers, review, or aggregateRating should be specified" on Product; "Unparsable structured data" when a stray comma or quote breaks the JSON; and date format errors when datePublished lacks the time zone. Fix the template, then use Validate Fix in the report so Google recrawls the affected pages. Warnings do not block rich results; errors do.

Schema for AI search: what ChatGPT, Gemini and AI Overviews read

Schema for AI search is the same markup used differently. Google's AI Overviews, Gemini, ChatGPT search and Perplexity build their answers from pages they can parse cleanly, and structured data gives them unambiguous facts: what the company is, which city it serves, what the product costs, what the FAQ answers are. Organization with sameAs and alternateName helps AI systems attribute statements to your brand. Service with areaServed is how they learn you serve Surat and Ahmedabad as well as Rajkot. Product with price in INR is how they quote a cost. Keep the markup consistent with the visible text, and pair it with direct answer paragraphs under question headings. Our generative engine optimization guide covers the writing side.

What we have seen on business sites in Rajkot and Gujarat

JK Tech Hub audits and builds structured data for its own site and for clients across Gujarat, and three patterns dominate. First, Product markup with a schema price that no longer matched the visible price: an auto component exporter near Metoda GIDC had updated prices in the catalogue but not in the template, and the Products report filled with errors until the two were tied to the same database field.

Second, self-serving review stars. A coaching institute in Rajkot had marked its homepage with an aggregateRating copied from Google reviews. The stars appeared for a few weeks, then the site received a structured data manual action. We removed the markup, filed the reconsideration and moved genuine student reviews onto individual course pages with Course and Review markup that complied.

Third, the simplest win: adding VideoObject to a pump manufacturer's product pages where YouTube demonstrations were already embedded. Within a month those pages showed video thumbnails in results and the click-through rate in Search Console rose noticeably with no other change.

How to decide

Start with Organization and BreadcrumbList sitewide. Then add Product or Service to every page that sells something, Article to the blog and VideoObject wherever a video is embedded. Add Event, Course and JobPosting only for real events, courses and vacancies, with one item per page. Skip HowTo, use FAQPage for AI readability rather than for stars, and never add review ratings to your own business on your own site. Test each template before launch and check the Search Console reports monthly.
