What is AI SEO or GEO, and how is it different from normal SEO
A growing share of searches in India now end without a click. The searcher types a question, Google shows an AI Overview or an AI Mode answer that summarises three to eight sources, and the searcher reads it and moves on. The same thing happens in ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini. If your business is one of the sources, you are named and linked inside the answer. If it is not, you are invisible for that question, even if your page ranks fourth in the old blue-link list.
Generative engine optimization, or GEO, is the work of becoming one of those sources. It is built on top of SEO and does not replace it: an AI engine cannot cite a page it cannot crawl, and most of what gets cited already ranks somewhere on page one. But GEO adds work that classic SEO never needed.
| Question | Classic SEO | AI SEO (GEO) |
|---|---|---|
| What is the goal? | A high position in the ranked list | Being named or linked inside the generated answer |
| What does the engine read? | Titles, headings, links, page authority | Passages that answer a question cleanly, entity signals, consistency across the web |
| How is the page written? | Keyword in title, heading and body | A direct answer in the first 60 words of each section, then evidence, then detail |
| What counts as authority? | Links to your site | Links plus mentions of your brand on sites the engine trusts, reviews, consistent facts about you |
| How is it measured? | Rankings, clicks, impressions | Share of answers that name you, for a fixed set of prompts, checked monthly |
