What payroll software must get right in India
Indian payroll is a compliance job before it is a calculation job. Provident fund contributions and the monthly ECR file, ESI for employees under the wage ceiling, professional tax slabs that differ by state, labour welfare fund in some states, TDS with employee declarations and Form 16 at year end, and bonus and gratuity registers. A factory in Gujarat with contract labour also needs contractor-wise attendance and wage records that survive an inspection.
On top of that sit the rules that are yours: shift patterns, overtime rates by department, late-mark policies, comp-offs, and how advances are recovered. Generic HR products handle the first list reasonably and the second list badly. A system built for your business handles both, because the rules are configured from your standing orders, not from a template.
