Quick Answer
PDF SEO means deciding which PDFs Google should index, giving those files real titles, a text layer and links, and moving anything that must convert, such as the product catalogue, into HTML pages. For a product business the rule is: product and category pages as HTML with images named and described properly, PDFs only for datasheets and drawings that engineers download, and YouTube videos embedded on the product page with video schema. For visual product categories, image search alone can add 10-20% of organic visits once this is in place.
This guide is for manufacturers, wholesalers and brands whose products are currently shown to the world as a PDF catalogue, a folder of supplier photos and a few videos on a phone: tile and sanitaryware companies in Morbi, kitchenware and bearing makers in Rajkot, jewellery and textile sellers, pump and machinery builders. After reading it you will be able to decide which files to let Google index, how to turn the catalogue into pages that rank, how to name and describe every image, and how to publish video so it brings enquiries rather than views.
PDF SEO: how Google indexes PDFs and when you should let it
Google indexes PDFs and treats each one as a page. It reads the text layer, uses the PDF's metadata title or the first line as the result title, follows the links inside the file, and shows a PDF label in results.
The problems start after the click. A PDF has no menu, no enquiry form, no WhatsApp button and no related products, so a visitor who lands on it reads and leaves. It loads slowly on a mid-range phone, the 2021 edition stays indexed long after the 2026 one is uploaded, and when the same specifications also exist on an HTML page the two compete for the same search.
So the rule is: let Google index a PDF when it answers a search that an HTML page cannot answer better, such as a datasheet, installation manual or dimension drawing. Block price lists, internal documents, old editions and duplicates with an X-Robots-Tag noindex header. Give every indexed PDF a descriptive file name, a title in its metadata, a real text layer rather than a scanned image, and a link back to the product page on the first page of the document. Link to the PDF from the product page, so Google and the visitor know which page is the main one.
Brochure SEO: the company brochure sales sends on WhatsApp
The brochure is usually the most-shared file in the company and the least useful one for search. Host it at one stable URL, name it company-product-brochure.pdf, put the website address and phone number on every page, and build an HTML "company profile" page with the same content so that the search traffic lands on a page with a form.
Technical drawings SEO: dimension sheets and GA drawings
Engineers search for "[product] dimension drawing pdf" and "[product] general arrangement drawing". Host each drawing as a PDF with a text layer, named by product and size, and build a page for each product that shows the drawing as an image with the dimension table repeated in HTML. The page ranks for the search, the PDF ranks as a second result, and both lead to the enquiry form.
CAD files download SEO: STEP and DWG downloads as lead magnets
Google cannot read the inside of a STEP, IGES or DWG file, so the page that describes the download is what ranks. Give it the product name, format list, file size, revision date and a preview image. Ungated downloads bring more engineers and more links from forums and design teams; gated downloads bring email addresses. A workable compromise for most Gujarat machinery makers is a free PDF drawing and an email form for the native CAD file.
Catalogue SEO: turning a PDF catalogue into indexable product pages
A 60-page PDF catalogue is one page to Google. A company with 400 products in it ranks for none of them. Catalogue SEO is the project of breaking that file into HTML pages, one per product family, each able to rank for its own search and to receive an enquiry.
| Question | PDF catalogue | HTML product pages |
|---|---|---|
| How many searches can it rank for? | One file, a handful of queries | One page per family, hundreds of queries |
| Mobile reading | Pinch and zoom, slow download | Fast, responsive, images sized to screen |
| Enquiry from the page | None; visitor must find the website | Form, WhatsApp and call button beside the product |
| Updating a price or spec | Re-export, re-upload, old file stays indexed | Edit one field |
| Images and video | Compressed, not searchable | Named, described, in image search; video embedded |
| Structured data | Not possible | Product schema with specs, brand and availability |
Group products into families that match how buyers search (for example "triply kadai" rather than 14 size codes), give each family a page with a specification table, three or more real photographs, applications, MOQ and lead time, and keep the PDF datasheet as a download at the bottom. Build category pages above the families and add Product schema.
Product photos SEO: shooting, naming and placing images that rank
Product photos SEO starts at the shoot, not in the upload form. Shoot one clean hero image on a white or neutral background and three to six in-use or detail images: a tile laid in a room, a kadai on a stove, a pump installed. Use your own photographs. Supplier stock images are already on thirty other websites, and Google has no reason to show yours. Place the hero image near the H1, within the first screen, and put a caption with the product name under each image where the design allows.
Image file names SEO: what to name the file before upload
Google reads the file name. IMG_2034.jpg says nothing; ss-304-triply-kadai-24cm-front.jpg says exactly what the image is. Use lowercase, hyphens between words, the product name, the key attribute and the angle, and stop there. Repeating a keyword five times in a file name reads as spam to Google and makes the files impossible to manage internally.
Image SEO alt text: what to write for product photos
Alt text describes the image for people who cannot see it and for Google. Write 8 to 15 words that say what is in the picture: "Stainless steel triply kadai 24 cm with glass lid, front view". Include the product name and one key attribute, do not begin with "image of" or "picture of", and never stuff it with city names. Decorative images, such as background patterns, get an empty alt attribute so screen readers skip them.
WebP images SEO: format, size and fallback
WebP files are typically 25-35% smaller than a JPEG of the same quality, Google indexes them normally, and every current browser displays them. Serve product images as WebP under 150 KB, with width and height attributes so the page does not shift while loading, a srcset so a phone receives a smaller file than a desktop, and lazy loading for anything below the first screen.
Image sitemap: when you need one
An image sitemap lists the images on each page so Google finds images it might otherwise miss. You need one when images load through JavaScript galleries, when they sit on a separate CDN domain, or when a product page carries dozens of images. A 40-page site with images in plain HTML does not need one. Include the image location and a short caption per image, keep under 1,000 images per page entry, and submit it in Search Console next to the main sitemap.
Image search traffic: how much to expect and how to measure it
Image search traffic arrives from two places: the Images tab, and the image blocks Google inserts into normal results for visual products. In Search Console, set the search type to Image to see it separately. For tiles, kitchenware, jewellery, furniture and machinery we typically see image search deliver 10-20% of impressions and a smaller share of clicks, with lower intent but excellent discovery: the buyer saw the product before reading a word.
Make the landing page earn that visit. The image should sit on a product page with a price or price band, specifications and an enquiry button, not on a gallery page with 200 thumbnails and no text.
Video SEO on YouTube: titles, descriptions and chapters
Video SEO on YouTube works on two fronts at once: YouTube's own search, and Google results, where videos appear for "how to", "demo" and "installation" queries. Title each video with the product and what the video shows ("Triply kadai 24 cm: how it heats compared with aluminium"). Write a description of at least 150 words that repeats the specifications and links to the product page. Add chapters with timestamps, a custom thumbnail with the product visible, and a playlist per product line.
YouTube for business in India: what to publish as a product company
YouTube for business in India works best with factual, repeatable formats: a factory tour, a product demonstration per family, an installation or usage guide, a packing and dispatch video, and comparisons within your own range (the 20 cm against the 24 cm, grade A against grade B). Record in Hindi or Gujarati voiceover if that is natural for your buyers and add English subtitles, so one video serves domestic and export audiences.
Product video pages: embedding on the product page or a separate page
Embed the video on the product page itself, below the hero image and above the specification table, with a two or three line transcript or summary beneath it. Google indexes video best when one video is the main content of a page, so a separate video page is only worth building when the video is the point, such as an installation guide.
Video schema: getting the thumbnail into Google results
Add VideoObject schema to each page that embeds a video, with the name, description, thumbnail URL, upload date, duration and the embed URL. This is what lets Google show a video thumbnail against your result and list the page in video results. If you mark chapters in the schema as well, Google can show key moments. Validate it with Google's Rich Results Test after publishing, and keep the thumbnail URL reachable; a broken thumbnail removes the result enhancement.
What we have seen with catalogues and images for Gujarat product companies
A tile manufacturer in Morbi had a 2,000-SKU PDF catalogue, a gallery page of 400 unnamed images and no product pages. Search Console showed impressions for the brand name and little else. We built 120 series pages with named, described WebP images and an image sitemap. Within six months image search accounted for roughly a sixth of impressions and the series pages ranked for size and finish searches the PDF could never have matched.
A kitchenware brand in Rajkot used the same supplier photographs as thirty other sellers. A two-day reshoot of 60 products on a white background and in a kitchen, with proper file names and alt text, did more for image visibility than a year of blog posts. A pump manufacturer near Rajkot had dimension drawing PDFs that ranked well and led nowhere; adding an HTML page per pump with the drawing, the table and an enquiry form turned those downloads into the first measurable enquiries from that traffic.
How to decide where to start
- If your products exist only as a PDF catalogue, start with catalogue SEO: family pages first, everything else after.
- If you have product pages with supplier photos, book a reshoot and rename, describe and convert the images to WebP as they go up.
- If engineers download your drawings, build the HTML page per product around each drawing and add the enquiry form.
- If you have videos on a phone, publish two a month on YouTube, embed each on its product page and add video schema.
- If everything above exists, add the image sitemap, block the PDFs that should not be indexed, and start tracking image and video search in Search Console.
Budget wise, converting a 60-page catalogue into 40 to 80 family pages with images and schema is a project of ₹60,000 to ₹2 lakh depending on photography; the image clean-up on an existing site is usually under ₹40,000.
