Quick Answer

Google Business Profile categories decide which searches your listing can appear for, and the primary category carries far more weight than the up to nine additional ones. Pick the most specific primary category that describes your main revenue line, add two to five secondary categories for the rest, then fill services with one entry per thing you sell, each with a 300 character description. A wrong primary category is the most common reason a verified Indian business never shows in the map pack.

This guide is for owners of software firms, factories, clinics, coaching institutes, shops and service businesses in India who have a verified profile and want it to show for the right searches. By the end you will know which primary category to choose, what to add as services, products and attributes, how to set up messaging and booking, and whether changing a category will hurt your ranking.

How Google Business Profile categories control which searches you appear for

Google matches a search like "bearing supplier near me" to listings whose categories relate to bearings, then ranks those by distance, reviews and other signals. If your category is "Manufacturer" and nothing else, you are not even in the pool for that search. Categories are a filter before they are a ranking factor, which is why a profile with 80 reviews can be invisible while a competitor with 12 sits at the top.

Google maintains a fixed list of roughly 4,000 categories in English. You cannot invent one. If the exact phrase you want does not exist, choose the nearest, and put the exact phrase in your services and description instead.

Primary category vs secondary category

The primary category is the one shown under your name on Maps and the one Google trusts most for matching. Secondary categories, up to nine, widen the net without diluting the primary. The rule that works: the primary describes what most of your revenue comes from, and secondaries describe what you also do and want to be found for.

Two mistakes are common in India. The first is choosing a generic primary such as "Business to business service" or "Corporate office" because it sounds safe. The second is adding every category that is remotely related, including ones you do not offer, which looks like spam and can trigger a suspension. Three to six categories in total is typical for a focused business.

Which category to choose for common Indian business types

BusinessPrimary categoryUseful secondary categories
Software companySoftware companyWebsite designer, Internet marketing service, Computer consultant
Casting or forging unitFoundry or ManufacturerMachine shop, Exporter, Industrial equipment supplier
Bearing or pump dealerBearing supplier or Pump supplierIndustrial equipment supplier, Wholesaler

Dental practiceDental clinicDentist, Orthodontist, Dental implants provider
Coaching instituteCoaching centerTutoring service, Educational institution, Computer training school
Kitchenware showroomKitchen supply storeHome goods store, Wholesaler, Exporter
Real estate agencyReal estate agencyReal estate consultant, Property management company

Exact category names change from time to time; type the first word in the category box and pick from what Google offers.

Best category for software company on Google

Use "Software company" as the primary. If most of your revenue is websites, "Website designer" is the better primary and "Software company" goes second. Add "Internet marketing service" only if you sell SEO or ads as a service line, and skip "Computer repair" and similar categories that bring walk ins you do not want. For our own profile in Rajkot, "Software company" primary with web and marketing secondaries covers every search we care about.

Google category for manufacturer

"Manufacturer" exists but is weak because it is generic. Look first for the product specific category: Foundry, Machine shop, Steel fabricator, Pump supplier, Bearing supplier, Hardware store, Kitchen supply store, Ceramic manufacturer. Use the product category as primary and "Manufacturer" or "Exporter" as secondary. Buyers search by product, not by the word manufacturer.

Google category for clinic

A single doctor profile should use the specialty as the primary: Dermatologist, Orthopedic surgeon, Gynecologist, Pediatrician. The clinic establishment gets its own profile with "Medical clinic" or "Dental clinic" as primary. Do not use "Hospital" for a clinic with no inpatient beds; it is a different category with different expectations and it invites edits from the public.

Google category for a coaching institute

"Coaching center" is the primary for exam and tuition classes. Add "Tutoring service" and the subject specific ones where they exist, such as "Computer training school" or "Language school". Institutes that also run a hostel or a library can add those as secondaries only if they are open to the public.

Add services to Google Business Profile

Services sit under each category and are the place to list exactly what you sell in the words customers use. Google suggests services for many categories; accept the ones you offer, then add custom ones. Each custom service takes a name, an optional price or price range, and a description up to 300 characters. Write the description as one or two plain sentences with the location and the key detail.

  1. Open the profile, choose Edit services, and pick a category.
  2. Tick the suggested services you genuinely provide.
  3. Add custom services one per offering: "Payroll software for 50 to 500 employees", "CNC machining of SG iron castings", "Root canal treatment".
  4. Add a price band where you can; "From ₹45,000" is better than nothing.
  5. Review every quarter and remove services you no longer provide.

Services do not create new ranking magic, but they let Google match long searches and they show on your profile under a Services tab, which raises calls.

Add products to Google Business Profile

Products are for things with a photo and a price: a POS billing package, a kadai set, a bearing series, a dental implant plan. Each product needs a name, a category you define, a photo, and optionally a price and a description. Products appear as a carousel on mobile and get a surprising number of taps. A manufacturer can list its top ten product lines; a software firm can list its named packages with a starting price. Keep photos real, not stock.

Attributes, description and hours

Google Business Profile attributes

Attributes are the tick boxes: women owned, wheelchair accessible entrance, online appointments, onsite services, accepts UPI or cards, free parking, and category specific ones such as "serves vegetarian dishes" or "offers online classes". They display as labels on the profile and some are searchable filters. Fill every one that is true. They take five minutes and most competitors leave them blank.

Google business description examples

The description is up to 750 characters, with the first 250 visible before "more". Lead with what you do and where, then who you serve, then one proof point. No keyword stuffing, no links, no offers.

  • Manufacturer: "Precision SG iron and ductile castings from our foundry in Metoda GIDC, Rajkot, supplied to pump, valve and automotive makers across India and exported to Europe and the Middle East. ISO certified, in house machining, batch sizes from 50 to 50,000 pieces."
  • Clinic: "Skin and hair clinic on Kalawad Road, Rajkot, led by a board registered dermatologist. Treatments for acne, pigmentation and hair loss, with a separate paediatric skin slot every evening."
  • Software company: "JK Tech Hub builds mobile apps, web applications, ERP and billing software for businesses in Rajkot and worldwide since 2018. Fixed price quotes, 150+ completed projects."

Special hours on Google Business Profile

Special hours override your regular hours for specific dates. Set them for Diwali, Holi, Uttarayan, Independence Day, and the annual shutdown common in Gujarat factories. A profile that says "open" on Diwali and is shut earns bad reviews and an "hours may differ" label. Set special hours a month ahead; they stay in a list you can edit.

Messaging, booking, menu and Q and A

Google business messaging setup

Google retired its built in chat feature for Business Profiles in 2024. The current way to offer messaging is to add your WhatsApp number or an SMS number in the profile's contact settings, which places a chat button on the listing that opens that app directly. Check what the dashboard offers in your account, because the exact options have changed more than once. Whichever you use, reply within a few hours during business hours or remove it; an unanswered chat button costs more trust than none.

Booking button on Google Business Profile

Clinics, salons, coaching centres and consultants can add an appointment link, which shows as a Book button. The link can point to any booking page, including a form on your own website. Businesses in supported categories may also see Google's own reservation option through a booking partner. If you do not have a booking page, link to a contact form that asks for name, phone and preferred time; it still converts better than no button.

Google Business Profile Q and A

Anyone can ask a question on your listing and anyone can answer, including strangers. Seed it yourself: post the five questions customers ask on the phone and answer them from the owner account. Parking, timings, whether you supply to individuals or only to businesses, which payment modes you accept, whether you need an appointment. Turn on notifications so you see new questions, and answer within a day.

Category change drops ranking: true or not?

It can, in both directions. Changing the primary category changes which searches you qualify for, so a profile that moved from "Dental clinic" to "Medical clinic" will lose dental searches and gain very few general ones. Moving from a generic category to a specific one usually improves visibility within two to four weeks. A category change may also prompt re-verification, which is normal.

Make one change at a time, note the date, and compare search terms in performance insights after a month. Do not change categories every week to see what happens; stability matters to Google.

What we have seen on profiles in Rajkot and Gujarat

Through our local SEO work in Rajkot, JK Tech Hub audits dozens of profiles a year, and category errors are the single most frequent finding. A bearing dealer on Gondal Road had "Industrial equipment supplier" as primary and did not appear for bearing searches at all; switching to "Bearing supplier" put it in the top three for its area within three weeks, with no other change.

A coaching institute near Raiya Road had chosen "School" as its primary and was competing against CBSE schools instead of other coaching classes. A casting unit in Metoda GIDC had seven categories including "Scrap metal dealer", added by a well meaning staff member, which was pulling in the wrong phone calls every day. A dermatology clinic on Kalawad Road had the doctor's profile and the clinic's profile both set to "Dermatologist", so the two listings were competing with each other; moving the clinic to "Skin care clinic" fixed it.

The same pattern repeats for ceramic showrooms in Morbi, brass part makers in Jamnagar and textile traders in Surat: generic primary, missing services, blank attributes.

How to decide what to change first

Check the primary category against what you most want to be found for; if they do not match, fix that today. Then add services for every offering, products for anything with a price, and every attribute that is true. Write the description from the examples above. Set special hours for the next three festivals. Add WhatsApp as the chat option and a booking link if you take appointments. Review performance insights after 30 days and adjust.

If you would like us to audit your categories, services and attributes and fix them in one sitting, ask for a fixed quote through the contact page or on WhatsApp.
